Fun Fine Motor Activities
Building finger strength and coordination is a foundational skill to playing piano. Fortunately, strength building activities are very fun. Below is just a short example list of some preschool fine motor activities, so get creative the ideas are endless!
Try to do fine motor activities as frequently as possible. Remember, these finger strengthening activities count as practice time, so hole punch that
Practice Punch Card. Most importantly have FUN!
Pom Poms and an Ice Cube Tray
Simply put a bunch of craft pom poms on the table with an ice cube tray. Then add some fine motor tools like tweezers or clothespins. Children will use the fine motor tools to pick up the pom poms and place them in the tray.
Pipettes and Water Play
Use cups of colored water and pipettes (eyedroppers) to experiment with mixing colors.
Play Dough and Buttons
Any play dough play is awesome. Kids really enjoy hiding objects (buttons, beads, small animals etc) in play dough and then digging them back out.
Tracing Lines with Gems
This fine motor activity for preschoolers is super simple to set up! Just draw lines on colored construction paper and have the kids trace along the lines with gems, buttons or beads.
Cutting
Scissor skills require finger strength and practice. All you need are kid safety scissors and scraps of paper. If your child is new to scissors, begin with showing them how to snip the edge of paper. Then try cutting a straight line, then shapes and then onto mazes.
(Remember when cutting the thumb is always on top)
Q-tip Painting
Q-tip dot painting is always a favorite with kids! You can write numbers, letters, words or let your child make their own design.
Check out Pinterest and other web sites for more ideas, even better make up your own activities! If you have a favorite activity to share, just let me know and I will pass it on to other preschool piano families!
